Did you know that 24 million children between the ages of 2 and 19 are overweight or obese? According to the CDC, childhood obesity has more than doubled in the past 30 years and in 2012, more than one-third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese. Those are scary numbers! With kids playing inside more and outside less and with families struggling with making nutritious yet budget-friendly meals, those numbers are going to keep growing.
The Girl Scouts are trying to fight those statistics.
Since the Girls Scouts first formed in 1912, health and fitness have always been an important part of the Girl Scouts experience. Though different badge-earning activities, girls learn different ways to be healthy and active and still have lots of fun. Some examples are:
- Trying a new sport.
- Trying five new stretches and learn why they are important.
- Invite a Coach or older athlete to teach a new skill.
- Keep a food diary. Evaluate and make a list of healthier options.
Today, in partnership with the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, Girl Scouts have developed three free booklets to help guide girls on their Journey as they learn to lead active, healthy lifestyles.
- Between Earth and Sky with Healthy Habits
- Wow! Wonders of Water with Healthy Habits
- Get Moving! with Healthy Habits
You can download all of the booklets here.
The nationwide Together Counts program, provided by the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, uses the principle of Energy Balance to inspire active and healthy living through physical activity and good nutrition.
What is Energy Balance? It’s basic concept is easy.
Energy In – the calories you get eat or drink
Energy Out – the calories you burn through different physical activities
These are lessons that a Girl Scout will use throughout her life and will pass on to her family and friends. Between the Girl Scouts and Together Counts, we have a chance to break some of the unhealthy habits that kids have learned.
